Jean Pickering Olympic Scholars say thank you for the support

Athletes say thank you for the support received from the JPOS over the last few years.

“I am writing to express how grateful I am for your support over the last few years. It has been an honour to be a recipient of the Jean Pickering Olympic Scholarship and it really has made a huge difference to my career. The funds put me in a financial position to move to Loughborough and base myself at the National Performance Institute. This was an essential move to put myself in a high performance environment with the necessary facilities and support to reach my potential. I have also been able to attend a number of training camps as a result of the support which have all been very important for my development both as an athlete and a future coach.

Furthermore, after being dropped from the World Class Performance Programme, the Olympic Scholarship effectively saved me from having to completely change my plans going into this Olympic year. Without the support I simply could not have afforded to stay in Loughborough and would have had to move back home.

It’s safe to say that the last few years haven’t gone to plan from a performance perspective for a number of reasons but it’s all part of the learning curve and I still intend to reach my potential in this sport. I am now in great physical shape after making the switch back to discus and will chase the qualifying distance for Rio to the very end of the qualification period. Looking longer term I hope to compete at a home World Championships in 2017 and then be competitive at the 2018 Commonwealth Games representing Jersey. This will hopefully set me up well heading towards Tokyo 2020 which is when I should be in my prime years as a thrower.

Thanks again for the support it really has been greatly appreciated!”

“Without the Jean Pickering Olympic Scholarship I probably wouldn’t have been able to stay in the sport.  I’ve struggled with injuries over the last 2 years which have led to an extensive number of physio sessions.  Without the grant I wouldn’t have been able to pay for these.

I can’t thank everyone enough for their support, not just for the money but the staff that have always been so kind and supportive, the public that fundraise for the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund,  those that run grueling events, like the London marathon, and anyone that donates!

Ron and Jean Pickering’s love and passion for athletics has led others to reach out and help athletes like me. Without that support I wouldn’t be looking forward and onto 2016 injury free and excited to finally race again!

Thank you all and good luck to anyone fundraising.  Here’s to a great future, all thanks to the Jean Pickering Olympic Scholarship”

John Lane on England duty

“Since being awarded the Jean Pickering Olympic Scholarship (“JPOS”), I have had seasons full of highs and full of lows.  The one thing that has remained constant throughout all my training sessions, physio sessions, MRI scans, numerous operations and those training days you want to forget is the constant support of the RPMF and especially the help of the JPOS.

I can honestly say that without doubt the help and support I’ve been shown across that last couple of years from the JPOS is the reason why I’ve been able to focus solely on my athletics career. Along with the financial support, the scholarship has given me the opportunities to meet new people, attend important and exciting events and has given me the chance to be a part of an amazing foundation that is at the forefront of an athlete’s development.

The scholarship has allowed me to travel abroad to competitions, buy expensive equipment such as pole vault poles and javelins, and helped me with medical bills such as MRI scans and specialist consultations.

I am truly honoured to have been granted the support from the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund and to be a one of the first athletes of the Jean Pickering Olympic Scholarships. I’m sure others will be in my position one day and will echo my feelings towards a truly fantastic foundation.

Thank you again.”
