The Ron Pickering Memorial Fund is pleased to announce that the British Athletics Writers Association have awarded the Ron Pickering Memorial Trophy in 2022 for Services to Athletics, to UK Athletics National Event Coach for Horizontal Jumps: Aston Moore.
Aston, a former UK record-holder in the triple jump and medallist at the Commonwealth Games, has been coaching Horizontal Jumps and Multi Events for his hometown club, Birchfield Harriers and UK Athletics for more than 30 years where he has worked with many top athletes. Aston, came to the world's attention as a Coach with his partnership with Ashia Hansen, taking her to the world indoor triple jump record of 15.16m in 1997 which still ranks as the 3rd best performance all-time. Ashia and Aston won multiple World Indoor, European and Commonwealth titles together and Ashia remains as the only British athlete to go beyond the 15m barrier.
Aston has worked with so many of British Athletics world class athletes over his 30 plus years of coaching at the highest level, including Phillips Idowu, Kelly Sotherton, Nathan Douglas, Para-athletes Olivia Breen and Stefanie Reid and Aston is currently working with Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Naomi Metzger.
His services as a coach and a coach educator are valued around the world and it is wonderful that he is being recognised for all that he's achieved over such a long career. Aston was recently announced as the recipient of UK Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award recognising his accomplishments among his peers across all sports.
Congratulations, Aston.
Shaun Pickering, on behalf of the Pickering family:
“My sister and I, along with the trustees of the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund, are extremely happy that Aston has been recognised in this way as he truly epitomises what it means to be a high performance coach, and it is particularly pleasing to recognise a Jumps coach in this way. Ron was lucky enough to coach Lynn Davies to Global and European Titles, and Jean Pickering, as Jean Desforges, was a European Champion in the Long Jump, and Aston and the athletes he has worked with follows on in this tradition.”
Kelly Sotherton, who worked with Aston for many years added:
" Aston became my coach through me losing my coach after Athens 2004. He had to learn how to coach a heptathlete who already had won an Olympic medal. No mean feat. We learned together, took our time , and found our groove. Many forget that he had a lot success with me and doesn’t get that recognition. He’s isn’t just the Triple Jump coach that everyone thinks he is. The most multi-talented , compassionate coach that I would say this country has ever produced. He will forever be my coach. “
