David, for so many remembered as the Voice of BBC Sport, sat alongside Ron Pickering in the commentary box for nearly 25 years at Athletics events around the world.
David served as a trustee for the RPMF since its inception in 1991, following Ron’s untimely death, and although his failing health in recent years stopped him from attending the trustees meetings in person, he always kept involved through regular communication with Jean Pickering right up until her own passing in March of this year.
His involvement with the RPMF over more than 20 years was invaluable, counting on his wealth of knowledge and experience with organisations such as the Sports Aid Foundation. David was always mindful of the importance of keeping Ron’s reputation as the “conscience of the sport” intact in the decisions and direction that the fund took over the years.
In an emotional tribute to Ron featured on the BBC in the days after Ron’s death, he referred to him as “the brother I never had” and he was a tower of strength to Jean since that time.
He will be missed by so many people, but his legacy, like Ron’s, shall live on.
RIP David Coleman, OBE (26 April 1926 – 21 December 2013)
