Harry Coppell, Sabrina Bakare and Jake Wightman among grant recipients for 2014

A record number of talented young British athletes are to receive almost £40,000 in grants from the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund in 2014.

Four European junior champions and two world youth gold medallists from last year head the list of recipients. Long jumper Elliot Safo, steeplechaser Zak Seddon and 1500m runner Jake Wightman – all of whom won European under-20 titles in Rieti last year – join IAAF world youth-winning pole vaulter Harry Coppell (pictured) and 400m runner Sabrina Bakare as £39,450 worth of grants is shared among 178 recipients.

That figure, which also includes Christina Ohuruogu’s sister and fellow 400m runner Vicky and world relay medallist Dina Asher-Smith who also won European junior 200m gold, represents a record number of athletes to receive Ron Pickering Memorial Fund grants. The recipients were chosen from a total of 350 applicants.

The new Jean Pickering Scholarship awards will also be announced in the near future, with full details to follow in a future issue of AW.
